Acrylic Colours & Auxiliaries

the limitless possibilities of artistic acrylic

The secret of acrylic's popularity lies in accessibility, safety, versatility, ease of use, exceptional brightness, saturation and colour preservation.

The limitless possibilities include painting on any dry, fat–free surfaces, creating complex volumetric textures, large-scale fills, thick strokes and thin transparent layering.

COMPARISON OF THREE GRADES OF ACRYLIC PAINTS: MASTER CLASS, LADOGA, SONNET.

The main properties & features of acrylic paints

safety

Acrylic paints do not evaporate harmful toxic elements, do not ignite, are made on a water basis. When using acrylic paints, there is a slight odor, much weaker than when working with oil paints, which makes them trouble-free for use not only in residential areas, but also in public places. You can dilute acrylic with water or a special diluent to a liquid state and paint in the glazing technique. For best results, use distilled water.

fast drying

Acrylic paints dry quickly. The water present in the paint quickly evaporates, and a strong film forms on the surface of the canvas or paper. The drying rate depends on the consistency of the paint and the thickness of the paint layer. The thicker the paint layer, the longer the drying process takes. The drying process of the finished work in the impasto technique can take up to several days, and painting in thin layers can completely dry within a few hours. If it is necessary to slow down the drying of the paint during operation, you need to add a special drying retarder for acrylic paints to each colour.

AWESOME FEATURES

Acrylic colours can be transparent, semi-transparent and opaque. These properties are inherited from the same properties of the pigment with which the paint is made.

IRREVERSIBLE DRYING

Acrylic paints dry out irreversibly. Unlike classical gouache and watercolour, acrylic after drying is not washed away by water, forming a durable and elastic colourful layer. Since acrylic dries quickly, and the dried paint layer is not washed out by water again, then in a short period of time you can paint layer by layer and achieve amazing results in a short period of time. Brushes and other tools should be rinsed with water immediately after use.

vary in consistency

Acrylic paints vary in consistency. Master Class - Heavy Body acrylic paints have a thick consistency similar to butter, which makes working with them similar to working with oil paints: they retain the shape and texture of a brush stroke or traces of a palette knife. Sonnet and Ladoga - Soft Body acrylic paints - are smoother, the consistency resembles a soft buttery cream. They have a less viscous consistency, retain light brush marks. Colours mix easily and quickly, dry quickly, and are great for basic painting techniques.

EXCELLENT ADHESION

Acrylic paint penetrates well and is fixed on the base for painting, so almost any material (with the exception of some types of plastic) is suitable. If you use cardboard, fabric canvas or other liquid-absorbent material, cover the base with acrylic primer, as the surface should be dry and free of dust and grease. The primer evens the surface, preserves the saturation and depth of colours, not allowing the pigment to go deep inside the base.

MINIMAL SHADE CHANGE

Acrylic darkens slightly when drying. The acrylic emulsion has a slightly milky appearance and becomes transparent when the paint dries. This process is called changing the colour from wet to dry. It is most noticeable in dark transparent pigments, and is less noticeable in light opaque pigments.
